During the winter of 2008-2009, a three week conflict in the Gaza Strip that began on December27 2008. Israels goals to this war was to stop rocket fire into Israel from Palestinian and stop weapons being smuggled into the Gaza Strip. The Palestinian kept firing rockets in response. They considered this conflict "massacres" . Israels forces kept to attacking only military targets, striking in densely populated cities. Hamas returned by firing rockets and mortars against civilian targets.
The conflict ended on January 18th, when Israel declared a ceases fire, Hamas followed twelve hours later with a one-week ceasefire. Shin Bet, stated there was a decrease in Palestinians rocket attacks after the conflict. So apparently, their reasoning for this conflict was right. They wanted the rockets from Palestinian to stop and it did decrease. They tried to keep to only their targets which was the military, policing forces and rocket launches. Hamas on the other hand targeted civilians.
In September of 2009 both Israel and Palestinian were accused of war crimes during this conflict.
but, in January of 2011 the UN's Goldstone no longer believed Israel committed war crimes.
